1. INTRODUCTION Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) accounts for approximately 2% of all cancer cases [1]. It is the most common form of kidney cancer and 25%-30% of patients present with advanced (metastatic) disease at time of diagnosis. An epidemiological literature review reported an annual incidence of advanced RCC in major European countries, the United States and Japan ranging from 1,500 to 8,600 cases [2]. The economic burden of advanced RCC has been estimated at $107-$556 million in the United States in 2006 [2].
